Thanks to your support, Nicole and her children have the tools to take on life’s challenges.
When life throws you a curve ball, you keep batting and don’t give up. That’s how Nicole takes each day at a time. She is a mother raising two children, Tyler age 12 and Harley age 9.
In 2011, Nicole was diagnosed with cancer.
“I’ve been dealing with it the best I can,” said Nicole, “but the kids also have to deal with it too.”
Last fall, Tyler was exhibiting issues at school and at home. He wasn’t coping with his problems in a healthy way. Nicole reached out for support and was referred to Highfields’ home-based therapy program. They started working with their Highfields counselor, Kim, once a week to help Tyler.
“It’s been so convenient for Kim to come to our home,” said Nicole. “She works with Tyler, but she really helps the whole family.”
Kim spends quality time with Tyler during therapy sessions, and uses games and activities as a way for him to open up. Nicole and Harley participate in family sessions so they can learn how to help Tyler as a family. They have tough conversations about Nicole’s illness and how to deal with it together.
“Kim has talked to both my kids about what to expect with my illness and what’s going to happen in the future,” said Nicole. “That’s one of the things I appreciate the most.”
Therapy has been beneficial for Tyler. He is doing better in school, helping his mom and sister at home, and working through his problems in a healthier way.
Nicole is grateful to have support from Highfields. During the holiday season Highfields helped send Nicole and her family to the Great Wolf Lodge so they could create some family memories during the tough times. She was touched by the gesture.
“It really came in handy at a time when I was feeling overwhelmed and exhausted,” said Nicole. “It was awesome that we got to enjoy some family time together.”
Nicole would recommend Highfields to families who are dealing with a difficult child or a tough situation.
“Our experience with Highfields has been wonderful,” said Nicole. “Anything Tyler or I have ever needed or could ever ask for, they have been right there to help us with.”
