Finding Home

Macie* is a former client of the Highfields Family Reunification Program (FRP). She was introduced to Highfields when she was going through a difficult time involving substance use. Child Protective Services became involved, and Macie’s 11-year-old daughter was removed from her home.

“I am a home-care nurse, and I was feeling overwhelmed at the time,” said Macie. “I made a mistake.”

After months of legal intervention, it was finally time for her daughter to come home. Macie began working with Highfields’ FRP counselors Erin Lampani and John Wilson. The Family Reunification Program helps children adjust back into their family home after removal.

Macie said: “John and Erin helped with so many things like my schedule and meetings, as well as financially for things like winter clothes, but mostly they were great listeners, and they helped give me the reassurance that I needed.”

Macie’s case closed in January, and the relationship between her and her daughter has gotten better. “It’s been challenging, but it feels awesome to have her back in the home,” said Macie. “It’s such a relief, and I know I will never make that mistake again.”

FRP is available to families living in Eaton, Ingham, Clinton, Ionia, Livingston, Branch and Calhoun counties. All families are referred to Highfields through the Department of Health and Human Services. Learn more about FRP at Michigan.gov.
