From addiction to recovery, you helped Samantha keep her family together.
Samantha and her fiancé care for their two children, 2 ½- year-old Jade and 1-month-old Tyler. Samantha is clean, healthy, and more confident than ever.
Last year, unfortunately, that wasn’t the case.
Samantha was addicted to drugs and was required to go to rehab when she was 3 months pregnant.
“I was devastated,” she said. “I put myself in that situation and had to deal with the consequences.”
Samantha went to rehab and took steps toward sobriety. She was referred to Highfields’ Home-Based 0-3 Program which helps families with children aged 0-3 who have experienced stressful transitions or traumatic events. Samantha started working with Highfields’ counselor Heather Church.
Heather supported Samantha while she focused on sobriety. Samantha participated in counseling, family therapy sessions, drug testing, sobriety meetings, and more. During therapy, they discussed Jade and the impact Samantha’s removal had on her.
Heather continued to work with the family when Samantha returned home. They focused on Jade’s behaviors to see how she was affected by the traumatic situation.
They learned that Jade experienced difficulty understanding and expressing emotions. Heather helped Samantha create a kid-friendly “Emotion Chart” with Velcro attachments. Now when Jade feels strong emotions, she points to the chart and Samantha helps her understand what she is feeling.
“It was a challenging time in my life, but I feel more confident in raising my children.” said Samantha. “I am in a much better place.”
